Tragic Parallels: The Full Story Behind the Death of Marion Christopher Barry
Tragedy repeats itself.
Marion Christopher Barry, the son of the late D.C. mayor Marion Barry, died early Sunday morning of an apparent drug overdose.
Cora Masters Barry, the former mayor's widow and Barry's mother, confirmed the 36-year-old's to NBC4. According to the police report obtained by WTOP Barry had smoked K-2, a synthetic form of marijuana, and PCP just after midnight on Sunday and began "acting crazy/differenrent" and then suddenly "dropped." He was found unconscious and taken to George Washing University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Barry had troubles with the law in the past, facing minor drug charges in 2011, 2013, and 2014.
In 2011 Barry claimed that he and his father were "more like brothers," but was hurt when he didn't find the support he needed from him when battling his own addictions. "Him having struggled with drugs, I would have wished he was there more," Barry said. "But he was more concerned about politics."
He eventually became sober, and in 2015 he ran for his father's Ward 8 council seat in the attempt to continue his family's legacy. Unfortunately, he came in 6th place in the election.
