Oprah Winfrey Gets Her Own Chicago Street
Before she officially relocates to Los Angeles to work on the development of her new cable network, Chicago is bestowing Oprah Winfrey with one huge honor.
On Wednesday, outgoing mayor of Chi-Town, Richard Daley, announced that a block out in front of Harpo Studios would be renamed “Oprah Winfrey Way.” Winfrey has long heralded Chicago as “the best city in the world” and the city is gleefully returning the love. At the unveiling ceremony, Daly told Oprah, “Your presence in Chicago has been a gift.” He also added that the talk show host is “a great ambassador for our city.”
Oprah first arrived to Chicago in 1984 to host A.M. Chicago. The talk show would go on to change its name to The Oprah Winfrey Show, ultimately becoming the most successful daytime talk show in television history.
On the honor, Oprah said it was “better than an Oscar or an Emmy.” She also added, "It is really just a full circle, miracle story that a little colored girl born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on a red dirt road ends up with my name on a street in the greatest city in the world, Chicago."
