Four Chilling Reasons to Watch 'The Despaired' — Jean-Pierre Chapoteau's Latest Horror Movie

Premiering this week on BET+, "The Despaired" stars Denise Boutte in a tale of resurrection and forbidden darkness, with Drew Sidora and TC Carson guest appearances.

Seven years after her husband is killed, Jill finds a mysterious letter promising to resurrect him. Still, she must make three sacrifices before he's banished to the abyss for all eternity. That’s Jean-Pierre Chapoteau’s "The Despaired" concept, starring Denise Boutte (Why Did I Get Married, Meet the Browns). The original film premieres this week, and we have four reasons to watch.

Black Horror is in style

We love the social horror of films like Get Out, but The Despaired taps into a darkness that evokes the cult classic Def by Temptation, with themes of despair, retribution, and flirting with the forbidden.

Clive Barker's influence

Fans of horror can sense Barker's influence in this tale right from the start. The idea of resurrecting a lover and using innocent guests as sacrifices recalls the classic “Hellraiser,” but that's only on the surface.

Twists and turns

We love stories with unexpected twists that keep us on the edge of our seats. At Wayne's funeral, a mysterious woman suddenly appears. We instantly assume her role, but later learn her secret is much darker than we could have ever imagined.

Star power

Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Drew Sidora appears as the mysterious funeral guest. TC Carson, mostly known as “Living Single’s” Kyle Barker, stars as Omari, who warns Jill of the consequences of flirting with the dead.

"The Despaired" premieres on May 2 on BET+.
