FYI: September 11 Tenth Anniversary Commemorative Events
Tomorrow, across the nation, thousands will gather to remember those who died in the attacks of September 11, 2001.
On that day over 2,800 people were killed including over 1,400 employees at 1 World Trade Center in New York alone. Overall, 19,858 body parts were found and 20 percent of Americans knew someone who was hurt or killed in the attacks.
Though it has been 10 years since America was largely shaken by terrorism, the pain of losing a loved one still lives within the souls of many citizens. On this anniversary organizations across the country have planned events to help remember those who lost their lives in the horrific acts.
“Rituals, such as the 10th anniversary commemorative events, give us an opportunity to come together as community members,” reads the website of 9-11HealingandRememberance.org, a non-profit remembrance organization for the families, loved ones and community members of victims.
Ten years after the attacks, two major memorials are opening on the anniversary of September 11: The National 9-11 Memorial in New York City and the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA.
In New York the memorial, which stands where the two world trade center buildings once stood before collapsing, will be dedicated on September 11, 2011 in a special ceremony for victims’ families. It will open to the public on September 12, 2011 with the reservation of a visitor pass. To obtain a visitor pass visit here.
The new memorial in Pennsylvania is placed at the field where Flight 93, scheduled to depart from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco crashed. After the dedication ceremony taking place today at 12:30 p.m. EST, which can be watched live on History.com, the memorial will be open to the public.
The sites of the two new memorials are not the only areas hosting commemorative events, however. Other events can be found below:
