Suspect Arrested In Shooting of Officer at HBCU Virginia State
The suspect accused of shooting a Virginia State University police officer was arrested on Tuesday in Chesterfield, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.
Deonta M. Blount, 21, who was apprehended without incident, is currently being held in Chesterfield County Jail without bond. He’s being charged with aggravated malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and use of a firearm in the commission of aggravated malicious wounding of the officer, identified as Bruce Foster.
The Chesterfield Police Department was assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Washington Field Division in tracking Blount down
Following the arrest, Chesterfield Police Chief Jeffery Katz released a statement to update the school and surrounding areas that Blount is now in police custody
“Our investigation will continue. We intend to hold accountable all parties who contributed to, aided, or in any way participated in this cowardly effort to end the life of Officer Foster, disrupt the peace and safety of Virginia State University, and threaten the welfare of our beloved Chesterfield County Virginia Community,” Katz said in a statement.
Around 1:30 a.m.. Sunday (Nov. 12), Foster responded to a disturbance that was the university’s campus before he was stuck with several bullets from the suspect’s firearm,
“The suspect ran off campus before shots were fired, injuring the VSU officer,” school officials said in a news release.
In the shootout, Foster was critically wounded and was taken to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was listed in stable condition, university officials said.
Over the past year, several HBCU institutions have reported incidents of gun violence on their campuses.
At Jackson State University, Jaylen Burns, an industrial technology major from Chicago was fatally shot on Oc.15 after attempting to break up a fight at the University Pointe Apartment Complex on campus.
Also, a 17-year-old male was arrested in October for his alleged role in the mass shooting that occurred on the campus of Morgan State University during Homecoming.
According to reports, the suspect fired at least 17 rounds and injured five people during the mass shooting.
