Kanye West Says It Was All A Part Of God’s Plan For Him To Crash Taylor Swift’s 2009 VMAs Speech

In an interview with Nick Cannon, the rapper admits he can’t blame all of his behavior on the alcohol.

Kanye West revisited that infamous moment at the 2009 VMAs where he interrupted Taylor Swift in the middle of her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards.

  • No one could have foreseen the mark that it would leave on both of their legacies, and now Ye made some new claims about the encounter during an interview with Nick Cannon on the latest episode of Cannon’s podcast show, Cannon’s Class. The two addressed numerous issues during their wide-ranging conversation which touched on politics, abortion, spirituality, and mental health.

In case you don’t remember it, Swift had just been awarded a Moonman for Best Female Video for “You Belong With Me” when West unexpectedly stormed the stage and took the mic to declare that Beyoncé deserved the trophy over Swift for her “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” video.

  • While reflecting over the moment, West asserted that the incident was part of a divine order and actually all part of God’s plan. “Right now, God is giving me information and he ain’t give me no other information that we have right now so that means he wants me to say this now,” he began.

“If God ain't want me to run on stage and say Beyoncé had the best video, he wouldn't have sat me in the front row. I would've been sitting in the back and they would've made it the first award and he wouldn't have made it so ridiculous because I had never heard of this person before. He even doubled down on his assertion that “‘Single Ladies’ is one of the greatest videos of all time.”

West reasoned, “I was only drinking Hennessy because I didn't want to go to the awards show because it was a set-up.” In a 2019 Billboard write-up sharing first-hand accounts from MTV staffers who witnessed the ordeal play out, it was stated that West had been inebriated at the time because he was drinking.

  • Kanye West also spoke on his spiritual evolution that followed in the wake of his 2016 hospitalization, noting that “God brought me to my knees multiple times.”

“The first time that I was put into hospital in 2016, I actually started reading the Bible,” he said. “That was part of what God hit me with. You know, God has a calling on all of us and he uses us in different ways.”

  • Taylor Swift has not publicly commented on his latest remarks but, for her part, the pop star has expressed her desire to be excluded from the narrative. Last year, she opened up in a Rolling Stone interview about her attempts to privately reconcile with West throughout the years and the resulting hurt she has felt over their public fallout. While speaking about their infamous 2016 phone call that was heard around the world, Swift noted Kanye “literally did the same thing to Drake. He gravely affected the trajectory of Drake’s family and their lives.

“It’s the same thing. Getting close to you, earning your trust, detonating you,” Swift said at the time. “I really don’t want to talk about it anymore because I get worked up.”
