Harris Wraps Up Campaign with Heartfelt Tribute to Her Mother
In the final moments of her presidential campaign, Kamala Harris pays tribute to her mother, the late Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris.
This week, the Vice President and Democratic nominee shared the final ad for her 2024 campaign—a new 90-second video narrated by actress Viola Davis, who reflects on the journey of motherhood and the legacy it leaves behind.
“Something cracks open inside you when you become a mother,” the “Fences” star says in her opening. “You realize long after you’re gone, these children will be your legacy.”
As photographs of Shyamala, a biomedical scientist from India, appear, Viola continues, “This mother came to America at 19 years old. She stood 5 feet tall, but she stood tall, becoming a cancer researcher, birthing two daughters—Kamala and Maya. And with them, she birthed her legacy.” Dr. Harris was also the mother of Maya Harris, a lawyer and political commentator.
As a biomedical scientist, her work in isolating and characterizing the progesterone receptor gene has stimulated advances in breast biology and oncology. Dr. Harris passed away from colon cancer in Oakland on February 11, 2009, at the age of 70.
