In an exclusive interview with the Sunday Times magazine, Janet opened up about her stance on her brother’s legacy in light of his fall from grace in the public eye as a result of the divisive documentary.

Michael was never charged with any crimes in regards to Robson and Safechuck, although he did settle one case pertaining to sexual abuse of a minor out of court in 1993.  The disturbing details in the documentary also led to a wave of television and radio stations pulling his music and other materials from their programming. While Janet did not specifically discuss the detailed allegations made against her brother in the HBO film nor the film itself, she spoke about the overall long-lasting impact that her family has made in music.

“It will continue,” she said. “I love it when I see kids emulating him, when adults still listen to his music.” 

She continued: “It just lets you know the impact that my family has had on the world. I hope I’m not sounding arrogant in any way. I’m just stating what is. It’s really all God’s doing, and I’m just thankful for that.”

She further revealed that she almost went to school to study business law but her father, Joseph Jackson, insisted she pursued a career in music after noticing her talent at a young age.
“When parents see something in their children, I guess they guide them in that direction,” she shared, according to the Guardian. “Music was a way to keep us off the streets. My father saw a way out for his children. A better life, [and] thank God for that.”
