Wack 100 Suggests DJ Kay Slay’s Battle With COVID-19 Is Serious
A late-night Instagram post from Wack 100, better known as rapper The Game’s older brother, seemingly indicates that DJ Kay Slay is currently fighting for his life.
Rap publications are picking up the post, citing that the longtime music manager shared a photo of the 55-year-old hip hop legend asking for prayers and support as the native New York fights COVID-19.
“Pray for my brotha @djkayslay,” he wrote in the caption. “It’s not looking good. He might be mad at me for this, those that know Slay but he needs all the support he can get … Been 14 days fighting Covid and he’s just been put on a ventilator. Keep him in your prayers Please.”
Instantly, members of the hip-hop community elicited comments of concern as Ebro Darden, Drink Champs co-host DJ EFN, Uncle Murda, and Twista all chimed in.
In an exclusive to HipHopDX, veteran promoter, producer, and friend to DJ Kay Slay, Van Silk told the publication that he’s been concerned with the New York icon’s health for some time.
“To my brother Kay Slay: I’ve known you since you were 15 years old,” he said in a text. “We[’ve] done a lot together — from me helping you with Straight Stuntin magazine as the first editor to how the many DJs we put on during the mixtape era, and now working on the ‘Rolling Deep 200’ project. Brother, I love you and you gotta get well. You know how I was on your back about getting vaccinated.”
The pandemic has infected and impacted the hip-hop community, hitting the culture hard. Fred The Godson lost his life to COVID-19 in April 2020, DJ Black-N-Mild, a popular New Orleans DJ, fell victim to the virus in March 2020, founding member of the Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. Ganxsta Ridd, died from complications Dec. 2020, and Zion I rapper Steve “Zumbi” Gaines passed away in Aug. 2021.
Prior to the new year beginning, Kay Slay released his latest album, The Soul Controller, on Dec. 17, with the lead single, “In My Soul” making waves on rap websites across the internet.
