Talent clearly runs in the Miller family. After making guest appearances on Nickelodeon shows like True Jackson, VP and Big Time Rush, rising teen star Cymphonique Miller is following the entertainment footsteps of her dad, hip hop mogul Percy “Master P” Miller and her actor-rapper brother Romeo, landing her own series for the network, How to Rock.

Based on the book How to Rock Braces and Glasses by Meg Haston, it casts Miller as Kacey Simon, a high school mean girl who finds herself out of favor with the popular crowd when glasses and braces render her imperfect. She then finds a new niche and more appreciative friends as the lead singer in a group called Gravity 5.

“What I love about Kacey is that she’s an example for me that people can change. She’s strong and she’s passionate and she loves music so I get to do music throughout the entire show,” says Miller, who sings and co-wrote the show’s theme, “Only You Can Be You.”

“She’s also really fun. I get to do crazy things like swim in a pool of mac and cheese, and sing in midair,” hanging on a wire. “Luckily I didn’t have to be up there for too long!” she laughs.

Singing in church since she was two and involved in school and community theater, Miller always wanted to entertain, “but my dad didn’t want me to be in the entertainment business because he knows how crazy it can be,” she says. Nevertheless, she was determined — and determined not to ride any family coattails. She flew to New York to attend an open audition without dropping any family names, and she kept it a secret until she made it through. “I feel good that Nickelodeon was behind me before they ever knew who I was related to,” says Miller, who believes having famous relatives in the business makes it harder “because you have something to prove. But it keeps me working hard. It’s a good motivation.”

Now 15 and in the 11th grade, Miller has an on-set tutor and plans to go to college, maybe following Romeo to the University of Southern California. “He’s always telling me, ‘Stay true to who you are no matter what. Never get into the business for fame or money because you will never be happy.’” She’d also consider following Romeo and Master P to Dancing With the Stars. “I love to dance,” she says. “I think that would be fun.”

How to Rock premieres February 4 on Nickelodeon.
