‘Peetah’ Morgan Of Morgan Heritage Reggae Band Dies at 46
Peter Anthony Morgan, most notably known as "Peetah," has died. He was 46.
On Sunday (Feb. 25), the iconic reggae band Morgan Heritage –whom he founded with his siblings in 1994– released a statement on Instagram to share news of his death, as reported by ABC News.
"Heritage 4 Life!" read the caption of the post alongside a formal statement from the Morgan family in cursive font.
"It is out of sincere love that we share that our beloved husband, father, son, and brother and lead singer of Morgan Heritage Peter Anthony Morgan has ascended today," said the statement of his death on Sunday (Feb. 25).
"Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support, and we ask for your continued prayers as we go through this process," the statement continued.
The family also asked for "respect" and "privacy during this time of healing."
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness took to social media to show his respects following Peter's death.
"My heart is heavy to learn of the passing of Peetah Morgan of the world renowned Morgan Heritage," he said on X (formally known as Twitter).
"I send my deep condolences to the Morgan family as they grieve this tremendous loss which is also a colossal loss for Jamaica and for Reggae Music."
A cause of death has not been released.
During the group's reign –featuring siblings Una Morgan, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morganthey– they cranked out hit songs that landed Billboard notoriety, including their 1999 single "Don’t Haffi Dread," along with "Down by the River.” Then, in 2016, the band won a Grammy for their album "Strictly Roots."
