DVD Review: Key & Peele Season One

Luther, Obama's angry translator, is coming to your living room just in time for election season.
The DVD for the complete first season of Comedy Central's irreverent sketch comedy series Key & Peele, starring former MADtv comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, drops today. For those who have never seen the duo in action, the series is a blend of skits and monologues that touch on everything from Black culture to politics and their own childhood experiences.
While they don't quite push as many buttons as Dave Chappelle or Chris Rock, Key and Peele have a distinct brand of humor that takes shots at pop culture in a good-humored, sometimes sweet way. Highlights from their material include imitations of stars like Lil' Wayne, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey and a rendition of President Barack Obama that should be studied by the guys at SNL. President Obama even gave the duo props when he told Jimmy Fallon that their impression of him is "pretty good stuff," an endorsement that's emblazoned on the cover of their DVD.
Being biracial is the cornerstone of many different skits, as both Key and Peele are biracial, and gives them a unique insight into Black — and white — culture that finds its way into skits like "Das Negroes" and frequently in their monologues ("On a daily basis we have to adjust to our Blackness," Key laments in one monologue).
For those who have already DVR-ed Key & Peele's first season, the DVD is worth it just for the extra footage of Luther, Obama's angry translator, alone, all of which feels especially relevant with election season in full swing. You know Luther's interpretation of Obama's message is exactly what the President wishes he could say on the talk show circuit.
Other bonus features include an audio commentary for about half the episodes, which gives great insight into the duo's process as well as their long friendship and rise as comedians. Also included are plenty of outtakes, which are sometimes funnier than the skits themselves, an exclusive interview and backstage footage from Key and Peele's appearance at the prestigious South Beach Comedy Festival.
