From Gospel Tunes to Silver Screens: The Multifaceted Journey of LaVan Davis
LaVan Davis has been a staple in the Tyler Perry universe since before the stage plays became movies. Davis currently stars in "House of Payne" as the patriarch, Curtis, but he was a singer before he started acting, and you’ve seen him singing in at least one Tyler Perry movie. But what else do we know about him?
Here are five quick facts about “Uncle Curtis.”
He’s a Gospel Singer
Davis has a gospel music background, like some actors who appear in Tyler Perry’s movies and plays. He was an original member of the Rickey Grundy Chorale and a member of the LA Mass Choir.
He’s Award Winning
The Atlanta native has won several awards for his performance as Curtis in House of Payne. In 2008 and 2009, he won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy for House of Payne. He was also nominated in the same category in 2010 and 2011.
Decades in the Game
He has worked with Tyler Perry since the early aughts. He appeared in the stage play versions of Why Did I Get Married, and Madea Goes to Jail. He has appeared in Daddy’s Little Girl with a singing cameo, Love Thy Neighbor and both the TV and film versions of Meet the Browns.
Everybody Hates Chris
He made some guest appearances on Everybody Hates Chris.
Not Related to Cassi Davis
He is neither married nor related to Cassi Davis in real life. There was a rumor that they were a real life couple, but that is not the case. They share the same last name and dassit. There’s not much about LaVan Davis’ personal life online, so it’s not even clear if he’s married at all.
