Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence, the only Black member of Michigan’s Congressional delegation, announced that she will not seek re-election to the U.S. Congress, becoming the 25th House Democrat to make the decision.

Lawrence, a Democrat who represents the state’s 14th District, comprising Detroit’s east side and some of its northwestern suburbs. She first won election to Congress in 2014, making her the state’s only Black member in the U.S. Congress. She made the announcement a day after Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush announced his retirement

In a Twitter post, she addressed her constituents.

The Detroit Free Press reports Lawrence's decision to not seek a fifth term to the U.S. House may be reflected in Michigan's newly drawn congressional maps.

The 14th district was one of two Michigan districts that were majority Black districts before it was broken up. Parts of Lawrence's district were merged with the 13th district which is another predominantly Black district held by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.

Lawrence becomes the 25th Democratic member of the House to say she is not running for re-election this year. To date, just 11 Republican members have said they will not run. While she is the only member of Michigan's delegation so far to say she is not running, the state could lose at least two more of its current members because of redistricting .

Lawrence's allies and other voting rights groups have questioned the new district boundaries which eliminated two majority Black districts in the state. On Monday, some Detroit lawmakers said they plan to file suit against the new maps.
