Al Roker Pens a Touching Tribute For Son Nick's 21st Birthday
Meteorologist Al Roker posted a sweet tribute to his son, Nick Roker, who turned 21 this week.
"Wow. #andjustlikethat 21 years ago, this young man changed our lives. Nick Roker, I love you and you make me so proud. #happybirthday Nick," Roker wrote on Instagram. He shared a video montage of pictures of Nick set to the tune of Vanessa Williams' hit song, "Oh, How the Years Go By."
Nick is Roker's youngest child with his wife, journalist Deborah Roberts. The two also share a daughter, Leila. Roker has an older daughter Courtney from a previous marriage. Courtney recently gave birth to her first child—a daughter making Roker a grandfather.
Sky Clara Laga was born July 3, and according to PEOPLE, the family "couldn't be happier."
When Roker and Roberts dropped Nick off at college last August, the couple reflected on their new status as empty nesters. Roker got advice from a famous friend on how to maintain his relationship with now-adult children.
“Well, first tip is you are going to weep copiously when you drop Nick off at college,” Former President Barack Obama said, according to The Today Show. “But you can’t let him see you cry, so you drop him off and then you quickly leave, and then you cry in the car.”
"Tip No. 2 is you try to bribe them with, like, nice trips," Obama said. "'Hey, we're going to Hawaii; you guys want to come?' so that they show up."
A veteran weatherman nearing 30 years on morning television, Roker was recently inducted into the Radio and TV Hall of Fame. He has been Today's premiere weather anchor since 1996.
