Parents of Michael Brown Slated to Attend Eric Garner Rally
Rev. Al Sharpton is calling on the city to take action after another senseless death. Sharpton’s National Action Network will host the "We Will Not Go Back" rally on Saturday in New York City.
Reports have estimated that nearly 15,000 protesters, including Brown’s parents, Michael Brown Sr. and Lesley McSpadden, are slated to come out in in honor of slain Eric Garner and Michael Brown, who both lost their lives as a result of police encounters.
The demonstration kicks off at noon near the area where Garner was killed and will then head toward the Staten Island district attorney's office.
"There's a pattern here. And the pattern is a predisposition toward disproportionate force, toward violence, on Black men," the Rev. Jesse Jackson told The Wall Street Journal. Jackson and Sharpton are two of the many activists who will attend the rally. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will not attend.
The officers involved in both Garner and Brown’s deaths have yet to face criminal charges. On Tuesday (Aug. 19) Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan announced that a grand jury would convene to determine if the officer who put Garner in a chokehold should face charges.
