In what will surely be remembered as one of the best years on record for Black cinema, Lee Daniels leads the pack. The director scored the highest grossing Black film of the year with The Butler, grossing $116 million and making Daniels a member of the elite "$100 million club" of filmmakers.
Whether or not the film, which was snubbed by the Golden Globe nominations, scores any Oscar noms, it has certainly struck a chord with audiences across racial and geographic borders. The film, starring Forest Whitaker as a White House butler with a front row seat to most of 20th century American history, has also been a favorite among critics this year.
The Butler is followed by Jackie Robinson biopic 42, rom-com hit The Best Man Holiday and Will Smith's After Earth, which grossed $60 million but was still considered a box office bomb. Tyler Perry scored two films on the list: Temptations: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, which came in fifth place with $51 million, and A Madea Christmas, in seventh place with $43 million.

Halle Berry's The Call, Marlon Wayans' A Haunted House and Kevin Hart's concert documentary Let Me Explain also made the list, as did this year's Oscar frontrunner 12 Years a Slave.
