LeBron James Speaks Up Against Police Violence
LeBron James isn't afraid to speak up about major national news stories.
He has openly offered his opinions about the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner. With the latter two men being killed by police officers, but grand juries failing to issue indictments for the cops, James decided to keep the discourse going on Thursday morning. While the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by a Cleveland police officer last month directly hits home for King James, the NBA superstar is more disturbed that police violence is happening, period.
"It doesn't matter, it's more troubling that it's happening in our country," James told reporters before his Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. "This is our country, the land of the free, and we keep having these incidents happen, innocent victims or whatever the case may be. Our families are losing loved ones. I'm not pointing the blame at anybody that's making it happen. In society, we've come a long way, but it just goes to show how much further we still have to go."
He added that if someone feels these issues hit their heart, they should speak up about them. After the wave of Ferguson riots eventually calmed down over the non-indictment of cop Darren Wilson, peaceful protests filled New York City streets following Wednesday's non-indictment of police officer Daniel Pantaleo, who choked Garner to death.
