In a historical European vote, Britain has voted to leave the European Union. This vote also forced the current prime minister, David Cameron, to step down.

Now, as Americans, you may be wondering why this is such a big deal and what this has to do with us. Well for one thing this decision will undoubtedly affect the global economy. Already, the British pound has fallen to its lowest level since 1985. Consequently, since the news was announced, US stocks have simultaneously plummeted.

This will affect many global markets, which is why leaders such as President Obama have spoken out against the "Brexit."

The debate over whether or not to leave the EU has also mirrored much of the political debate happening in the United States. The side in favor of leaving stood on the ground that they wanted to reclaim the UK. This right wing group of individuals wants to protect themselves from increases in immigration as well as refugees.

Now, if you’re paying attention, you’ve realized that this sounds awfully familiar. The nationalistic sentiments provided by the people who wanted to leave the EU are very closely related to the same sentiments as one specific GOP presidential candidate and his followers.

For us, yes this vote will affect the economy and our general dealing with Britain, but it also proves that you can never count out the ideas of the incredulous. This vote was something that was looked on as something that was basically impossible; however, here we are. Could this mean the same thing for a Trump presidency?

After the announcement, Donald Trump came out in support of the Brexit because, of course he would. Everything that this vote stands for directly represents his entire movement. After all, his slogan is “Make America Great Again,” and with his ideas about building a wall and banning all Muslims, he is not too far off from the Britons who voted to leave.

This means that we cannot discredit anyone’s ideas, no matter how ludicrous they are. This also means that fear can drive people to some very crazy extremes, and it’s imperative that everyone vote this fall, especially if you disagree in any way with the ideas of Trump. The Brexit will certainly affect the livelihood of Britain for years to come. Let’s hope we don’t experience the same thing.
