Chris Brown may be public enemy No. 1 to some, but he has a big supporter in rap superstar Andre 3000.

In an exclusive interview with The Fader, the reclusive half of the Grammy Award-winning rap group OutKast discussed his process for choosing the occasional music features he does every now and then. While speaking of his appearance on the remix to Chris Brown’s break up anthem “Deuces” Three Stacks said he hopped on the track as a show of support for the embattled R&B star.

“Of course I love the beat, but at that time a lot of people were on Chris Brown as a human being,” 3000 said of Brown’s personal struggles following the fallout from assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. “And I know he’d gone through his troubles or whatever and I just was like, I just want to stand by him and be like, hey you know you can’t really charge a man forever and condemn a man forever. So it’s really just like a support thing. I thought it was a cool thing to do.”

Of course Andre is not just lending his vocals to those in need of moral support. Of late he’s had stand out verses on tracks with plenty of stars who have their public personas intact. From his feature performance on Drake’s “The Real Her” to Lil Wayne’s “Interlude,” Andre revealed that he was mostly inspired by the new generation of rap stars when he agreed to participate on the songs.

“Now I talk to Drake, and I know he had to be like 10 when he was listening to what we were doing. You just never know who’s listening until you hear a connection,” said the veteran wordsmith who made his debut in 1994 with the OutKast classic Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. "I didn’t even know Drake dug my music, I just liked him as a rapper because I felt he had a balance. I didn’t even know that he grew up listening to me. But it’s cool to know that it’s a real lineage thing. I’m happy to see Kanye and Wayne and Drake and all these new artists. They inspire me in a way because they reach back and they say, ‘Hey, we want to get you on these songs.’”

While hip hop’s new blood has what it takes to get Andre’s creative juices flowing, it’s not quite enough to get him in studio full time to work on a new OutKast album. It’s been almost nine years since OutKast last released an album and Three Stacks thinks there is a good chance it’ll be a while before fans hear another one.

“There’s no plans for an OutKast album right now,” Three Stacks explained. “If we do another OutKast album one day, I would be super happy, because I’ll know that the vibe is right, and we’ll put our all into it. But if we never do another OutKast album, you know, I won’t be sad because we’ve been blessed.”
