Yvonne Orji Talks New Netflix Series And How She Wants To Do A Buddy Comedy With Regina Hall
Black people in the sci-fi genre seem little to nonexistent – but Netflix is changing the game with their brand new children’s program My Dad The Bounty Hunter. The new show stars Insecure alum Yvonne Orji, Laz Alonzo, Stranger Things Priah Ferguson, and rising child actor JeCobi Swain and follows two children sneaking in their father’s car to head to work with him to spend more time together, unbeknownst to him.
After hiding in the trunk, they soon realize their father’s job is anything but boring – he’s a bounty hunter in space, and they assist him in dodging dangerous aliens, robots, and numerous laser fights. While fighting alien crime with their dad is fun, they must make it back home in time before their mother catches the wind of what their father’s weekend turned out to be.
In a conversation with BET.com, the cast talks about the representation of Black actors in sci-fi, which actor they are on the “hunt” to work with, and a popular cult classic they would love to see in space.
BET.com: Some projects go to Broadway, the movies, and television, but let's say you can bring a show or film to space. What’s a cult classic film, television show, or Broadway play you would love to see in space?
Ferguson: Hamilton
Swain: I would love to see Matilda in space – maybe she can be adopted by aliens.
Orji: I would say Love & Basketball. It would be cool to see Monica and Q take their lives to space intergalactically. Or Fresh Prince, where Will would go from West Philly to West Mars. I’m quick with it [laughs].
Alonzo: My choice would be Martin because imagine trying to figure out how Bruh-Man would get into the house.
BET.com: Maybe he has a jet pack and flies into the apartment while zapping his sandwiches.
Alonzo: We here with it [laughs].
BET.com: Is there an actor on your bucket list that you’re on the “hunt” to work with?
Orji: I’ve said many times to my agents that Regina Hall and I need to do something together. It can be a budding comedy or drama; we need to play cops who are not great at their jobs. Whenever she opens her mouth, I want to work with her. Also, the project needs to be directed by Regina King.
Alonzo: I got to be in the movie and play one of ya’lls baby daddy [laughs]. While I had the pleasure of working with Regina King in This Christmas, I’m also eyeing Regina Hall.
Ferguson: My choice would be Angela Bassett.
Swain: I would say The Rock because I’m super tiny, and he’s gigantic – I feel like I would be a mini Kevin Hart.
BET.com: This is the first time we see a Black family in space in the sci-fi genre. How important do you feel this show will be in terms of representation, and what are your hopes for Black actors in the Sci-fi genre in the future?
Alonzo: I love the opportunity to play a father who wants to be present and love his family. We’re in an era where we have Black writers, producers, and directors, which is great because we’re represented not only in front of the screen but behind the screen, too. We have people creating the material the actors can perform, so when you see more of us in those writers' rooms, you’ll see more of us in other areas, such as space. The show checked off so many boxes, and one of our creators, Everett Downing, is African American. You can feel his fingerprint on how important this is.
Get your jet packs and head over to Netflix to stream My Dad The Bounty Hunter now.
