Madlib Loses Home, Extensive Music Collection In Los Angeles Wildfire
The Los Angeles home of Madlib has sadly perished amid the city’s raging wildfires.
On Monday, January 13, an Instagram post from the producer and rapper revealed that he lost his residence, alongside a DonorBox link for crowdfunding. As fans know, the beatmaker maintained an ample record collection, which was confirmed to have also been destroyed, along with material that Madlib was crafting.
“We are reaching out with heavy hearts to ask for your support in helping legendary producer Madlib and his family rebuild after losing their home, decades of music, and equipment in the devastating LA fires,” the Instagram caption reads.
Sharing the news was Madlib’s “Piñata” collaborator Freddie Gibbs, Flying Lotus, DJ Premier, and his former label, Stones Throw Records.
Last May, Madlib teased a follow-up to “Piñata” and “Bandana” with Freddie during a 10th anniversary concert dedicated to their first collaborative project. The producer has also claimed that he’s putting the finishing touches on a posthumous Mac Miller album, along with material for Erykah Badu and Planet Asia. Unfortunately, unless Madlib has backup files of the music that he’s crafted for these projects, they’re possibly lost in the wreckage of his home.
Since last Tuesday, January 7, the wildfires, started by the Santa Ana winds, have killed at least 24 individuals, with destruction sites spanning Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The natural disaster has ravaged 40,000 acres in the Greater Los Angeles area, along with 12,300 structures.
