Here's How Much Kevin Durant Cashed in On His New Warrior's Contract
Kevin Durant took his NBA Finals MVP award and went ahead and got a new contract extension with his current team.
The Golden State Warriors forward will sign a two-year, $53 million deal, which sounds like a lot, but actually works out to him making about $1.5 million less than he made last season and almost $10 million less than the $34 million max contract the Warriors could have offered.
KD is supposedly taking less money so more cap space can be freed up in order to either bring in new players or keep players with deals soon to be up in the Bay-Area.
According to ESPN, Durant has a player option on Year 2 and can opt out of the 2018-19 season to re-sign with the Warriors for a longer-term max contract, similar to what LeBron James did with Cleveland in 2014.
KD’s new deal comes just days after Stephen Curry inked a new contract with the team. The Warriors’ point guard locked himself in Oakland for a long time, agreeing to a five-year, $201 million extension.
The Warriors also just resigned backup point guard Shaun Livingston to a three-year, $24 million deal, and perhaps the team’s most valuable defensive player, Andre Iguodala, to a three-year, $48 million extension.
