Black Girls Code Founder Kimberly Bryant Removed Over Alleged ‘Workplace Impropriety’

She announced on social media that the nonprofit’s ‘rogue board’ ousted her.

Insider confirmed that Kimberly Bryant, the founder of Black Girls Code, was removed as executive director of the tech education nonprofit by its board.

On Tuesday (Dec. 21), Bryant made the announcement but didn’t share any details.

"Press release: so it's 3 days before Christmas and you wake up to discover the organization YOU created and built from the ground up has been taken away by a rogue board with no notification," she tweeted.

The board told Insider that it is looking into "serious allegations of workplace impropriety” involving Bryant, who will remain on staff during the investigation. In the meantime, it has appointed an interim manager for the organization.

Bryant founded Black Girls Code in 2011, with a mission to “build pathways for young women of color to embrace the current tech marketplace as builders and creators by introducing them to skills in computer programming and technology.”

A decade later, the nonprofit is considered “one of the most influential women’s groups in Silicon Valley,” according to Wired. The organization has educated thousands of Black, Latina and Native American girls in technology at a time when Silicon Valley struggles with diversity.

Bryant told Inc that she wanted to make a statement when she named the organization Black Girls Code. "It is about empowering Black women," she explained.

Over the years, the organization has built an impressive list of partners that includes IBM, Google, Facebook, Nike and Verizon.
