YNW Melly Tests Positive For Coronavirus In Florida Jail

The 20-year-old, who is currently jailed while awaiting a murder trial, is filing for restricted release after the diagnosis.

Florida rapper YNW Melly has tested positive for the coronavirus while in jail.

  • His team revealed his diagnosis in a post to his official Instagram page. “Melly has tested positive for COVID-19 today while awaiting his trial in Broward County Jail. He’ll be filing a motion for restricted release in hopes of better care due to any jails not being prepared to treat this new virus,” the post reads. “He hopes for your support and to recover soon #prayformelly send positive energy to him please.”

  • Melly, who’s real name is Jamell Demons, is currently detained at the Broward  County Jail where he has been awaiting trial. He and an accomplice were arrested in February of 2019 in connection to the murders of their friends, aspiring rappers Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams. Prosecutors accused the We All Shine rapper of shooting and killing Thomas and Williams, then staging it to appear as if they were attacked in a drive-by shooting, per Pitchfork. Melly was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and faces the death penalty if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

  • Melly’s diagnosis comes on the heels of multiple reports that incarcerated Brooklyn rap artist Tekashi 6ix9ine was released early from prison earlier this week after a judge ruled that his asthma makes him more susceptible to the coronavirus, as reported by NBC News. Other high-profile prisoners, including R. Kelly and Bill Cosby, have also been attempting to secure an early release amid the coronavirus pandemic.
