The former girlfriend of professional baseball player Danry Vásquez opened up about the abuse she endured which was captured on a recently released surveillance video.

In an interview with Univision Noticias, Fabiana Pérez said she regretted not reporting the violence to authorities at the time.

"I regret not reporting it before," Pérez told the Univision. 

In the video, which was recorded in 2016, Vásquez repeatedly hit Pérez and dragged her down the stairs of the Corpus Christi's Texas Stadium.

"There are things in that video that I see now and I remember them," Perez told Univision Noticias.

Pérez said at the time she was in shock of the abuse she was living with, which ultimately kept her from truly understanding the severity of her situation.

She says she could not understand how the person who was supposed to love her was capable of such violence.

"Now, when I watch the video, I remember things and I say: 'How could this have happened, why didn’t I do anything, why didn’t I react?'" she asked.

At that time of the incident, Pérez was only 19-years-old and was too afraid to file a complaint against the baseball player.

"They are things that happen and over time you realize, you are overwhelmed with fear, you have plenty of everything because you think that is the only person you will find in your life," she said. "Women who go through this: really get ahead, that's not the only person they're going to find, I can tell them as advice, as a testimony that violence is not love, jealousy, distrust ... it does not lead to anything.”

At the time of the abuse, Fabiana Pérez and Danry Vásquez had been together for several years. Although their relationship lasted for six years, it ended just months after that incident was filmed.

Now that she had overcome this abusive relationship, Pérez wants other victims to know that you can get out of a situation like this:

"After the storm comes calm, you realize that you can find people who really love you, you can make a normal life and find that you family has always been there supporting you, that life is not over. You thought that in your previous life you had everything and you realize that this was not a normal life, that what is a normal life is what you are living now after of that storm,” she said.

As part of his plea agreement, the Venezuelan baseball player had to take some anger management courses. When the video of the abuse went viral, Vásquez was released from the team where he played, the Lancaster Barnstormers.
