Soho Karen: Woman Finally Apologizes For Falsely Accusing Jazz Trumpeter Keyon Harrold’s Son Of Stealing Phone

Miya Ponsetto claims she has anger management issues.

After nearly two weeks of backlash, Miya Ponsetto, known as Soho Karen, is finally apologizing  for accusing jazz Trumpeter Keyon Harrold’s son of stealing her phone.

On Jan. 6, Sharen Ghatan, the 22-year-old’s attorney, told  the New York Daily News, “It’s horrible, what happened. She certainly should not have done that. She has some things she has to work through with herself, control issues, anger management issues. Of course she knows that.”
Ghatan also said Ponsetto maintains the attack was not racially motivated, “She saw what she thought was her phone in another person’s hands. It could have been any person’s hands. It wasn’t a racial thing. She got anxious, she got triggered, and she lost her sense of rationale.”

Ghatan continued, “She lost her phone, and she lost her mind. Obviously it was ill-advised. She wouldn’t do it again. This is certainly not racially motivated. She’s devastated about that interpretation.”
Ghatan also pointed out her racial identity, “She wants to clarify and give peace to the family. She’s mixed race. She specifically said it’s not about race. The way she talks, it’s not even an issue. It was the phone.”
It’s not clear what her “mixed race” identity is, but Ponsetto has  previously said she is Puerto Rican, which is not a racial identity.

Ghatan  added, “She’s very sorry about it.”

The New York Daily News reports  two NYPD detectives are flying to California to make contact with Ponsetto. It’s possible she will face criminal charges in New York.

A Dec. 26 video showed Miya Ponsetto in the lobby of New York’s Arlo Soho hotel accusing a 14-year-old of stealing her cellphone. The child is the son of Grammy-winning jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold. The father posted the video, which showed Ponsetto screaming in the lobby, and lunging at his child.

A spokesman for the Arlo hotel said that Harrold and his son did receive an apology from the manager and acknowledged that the situation could have been handled better, according to The New York Post

“We’re deeply disheartened about the recent incident of baseless accusation, prejudice and assault against an innocent guest of Arlo hotel,” the hotel said in a statement.

According to the New York Post, Ponsetto has had a couple of brushes with the law in the last year.

She was arrested for public intoxication in Beverly Hills on Feb. 28.

In May, she was detained for drunk driving near Calabasas and hit with four misdemeanor counts — two for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for unlawful use of a driver’s license, and one for driving with a suspended license.
