Buju Banton, one of the biggest stars to come out of Jamaica in the 1990s, is reportedly asking for a reduction in his jail sentence says ABC News. The singer, who was sent to a Florida prison in February on some serious drug charges stemming from a 2009 cocaine deal, wants his 15-year sentence cut.

Banton, who has rocked dancehall and reggae lovers for two decades with hits like “Wanna Be Loved,” “Murderer” and the still controversial “Boom Bye Bye,” won a 2011 Best Reggae Album Grammy for the 2010 Before the Dawn. Ironically, the win happened the night before his retrial earlier this year in February. The Jamaican star has been in jail since the arrest and garnered support from friends and fans, most notably Stephen Marley who reportedly used his Florida home as collateral to post bail for the fellow artist.

Noting the singers overall clean record and philanthropic work in his homeland of Jamaica, ABC says his lawyer David Markus has described the mandatory 15-year-sentence as "way more than necessary." The hearing takes place June 23.
