Not One Black Woman Is Included In The Top Ten Highest Paid Actresses List
Last Thursday, the country celebrated #BlackWomensEqualPayDay to remind everyone that on average Black women have to work much harder than white men to receive the same amount of pay in their careers.
That disheartening fact carries over to Hollywood as well. According to Forbes, the top 10 highest paid actresses (between June 1, 2018 and June 1, 2019) have combined to earn $314.6 million – and not one of them is African American.
Scarlett Johansson and Sofia Vergara top the list, earning $56 million and $44.1 million respectively. In fact, it isn’t even clear who the highest paid Black actress was during that time and where they’d even rank, a question Jemele Hill recently raised on Twitter.
According to Forbes, “earnings estimates are based on data from Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders.”
The figures outraged many on Twitter. See some of what people had to say below.
