Soul Train Awards 2022: Who is Alex Vaughn? Get to Know This Year’s Soul Cypher Performer

See the rising star perform in her first-ever Soul Train Awards cypher on November 26.

Singer and songwriter Alex Vaughn is up next, and this year, r&b fans can catch her performing for the first time during the Soul Train Awards 2022 Soul Cypher alongside  Durand Bernarr, Muni Long, and Tasha Cobbs Leonard. Renowned DJ and music producer D-Nice will take command of the turntables.

Ahead of this year’s celebrations of soul and r&b, hosted by comedian Deon Cole, we’re looking back at some of the most soulful moments in music and taking a sneak peek at the rising artists who are soon-to-be household.

  • The 90s highly influence her

While speaking exclusively to BET, Alex shared, “TBH, I always appreciated the effortless beauty of the women in the 90s. Always a very simple, less is more type of feeling. Never mean girls, just nice and naturally pretty. Those are probably the ONLY things I take with me from the 90s. In terms of my HAIR, I was just tired of it not growing fast enough, lol, literally pointed to a picture of a mushroom cut at the salon & never looked back (Circa 2011).”

She added, “Aside from that, I just see things I like and put them together. I don’t really look up to anyone for fashion inspiration, but if I really had to say one person, it would be MOTHER ELEKTRA from the show ‘Pose.’ That woman ATE. It was beyond the looks. It was her POSTURE and AURA. I will forever aspire.”

  • Her dream collaboration is Kanye West

During a May 2022 interview, Alex revealed that she wouldn’t someday collaborate with Grammy Award-winning rapper Kanye West. “He is the first artist I gravitated towards after the ‘kiddie music’ phase,” she explained. “He had soul but was flowing. You felt his words. You thought about what he said. His artistry has inspired me so deeply.” She added, “To collaborate on any music with him would be so full circle for me.”

  • She loves her free time

After a performance, the “So Be It” singer revealed she indulges in some profound rest, “When I get off stage, I’m usually still on fire. I am ready to get on another stage immediately. Since that is usually NOT the case (Lol), I just get some food and go to bed,” she said.  “Rarely do I wanna go out after. I wanna wipe off my face and watch all footage of the night before, like its film.”

The Soul Train Awards 2022 premieres Saturday, November 26 at 8 pm ET/PT on BET and BET Her.
