Lupita Nyong’o Is “Happy Without Hair,” Debuting New Look
Lupita Nyong’o debuts her new look after documenting her recent hair journey over the last month.
The Academy Award winning actress has opted to fully shave her head, and it’s safe to say that she’s loving it. “Happy Without Hair!” she captioned the up-close Instagram selfie.

Nyong’o, 40, jokingly added that she submitted an application to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Dora Milaje, a tribe of shaved-head female warriors who appeared notably in the Black Panther film.
The famed actress has included her fans in her hair journey through social media posts. In January, she teased the big chop of her sister locs. In a February post, her boyfriend, Selema Masekela, assisted with a little hair maintenance.
By the time April rolled around, she revealed her new hairstyle with a low cut. “It’s time to let you go,” she said during the IG reel video, with Boyz II Men’s “It’s Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” playing in the background. “You’ve been so good to me, you've been so thick! For the first time in my life. I'm gonna miss you. Come back again."
Nyong’o received support from many, including Black Panther co-star Michael B. Jordan, commenting “Beautiful.”
In a 2018 interview with Allure, the actress revealed she wasn’t always the glowing, confident star we see today. “Around 13-14 I had such a rough time with being teased and feeling really unpretty,” she said of her time and hair journey in Mexico, her place of birth. “My dad intervened and spoke to my mom about my hair, and she finally agreed. She took me to the salon in the middle of the school day, and I got my hair relaxed. I felt so much better because it was easier to tame. All the girls in my class had their hair relaxed. Very few had natural kink, so I felt a lot more acceptable.”
