Kim Wayans: 'We'll Work Together Again as a Family'
After several years as a comedienne, Kim Wayans reinvented herself as dramatic actress with her groundbreaking performance in the 2003 film Pariah. Now the sister of the hilarious Wayans family is bringing more of that drama to the small screen. Starting June 29, she can now be seen in the role of Vi on the new CBS legal drama Reckless (check your local listings.)
BET.com talked to Wayans about her new series and we even got her to weigh in on which of her brothers was the funniest.
Tell us about your character Vi in the new drama series Reckless.
Vi is short for Violet and she’s a paralegal who’s feisty, hard working and very smart. She’s got a great sense of humor. Plus, Vi’s got a knack for finding those facts that turn the cases in their favor — so she saves the day a lot, which is wonderful. I like the fact that she gets to go out in the field so I’m not just sitting in the office solving cases at my desk. I’m very active, usually pretending to be someone I’m not to get information that I need. I’m interviewing people; I’m following people. I’m kind of old school.
What do you love most about the project?
I read the script and it was really well written. I liked the idea of going to Charleston, South Carolina, to shoot. I’ve never been there before and that was one place I wanted to visit — so that was alluring and seemed like a fun thing to do. And then Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the pilot, is a very old friend of mine from I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, she was our set designer. So when I found out she was directing and she wanted me to come in and read for her, I couldn’t turn that down.
Your brother Keenan Ivory Wayans once described you and Marlon Wayans as being the best actors in the family. On the flip side of that, who do you think are the two funniest brothers in your family?
They are all hilarious but in different ways. Marlon is more in your face, anything goes. Keenan is more cerebral with his humor. Damon is edgy and a little on the dark side and Sean is so incredibly witty and so quick. They each have their own particular strength, but they are all very funny.
All four of your brothers are currently on a comedy tour together. Can audiences expect you to pop in one night for a surprise appearance?
No, that’s the boys doing their thing. I did standup way back in the day when I first started, but I never really loved it the way they do. I just used it as a means to an end. I like acting on a show. They love the art of just standing up there on stage with a mic and doing that. They are having a blast and I do want to catch them while they are touring together. It’s very special to have all four brothers on the same stage. So, I won’t be grabbing a mic and joining them, but I’m sure we’ll work together again as a family soon. They are working on various projects for us right now.
