Timbaland: This Generation Has No Stars

Veteran producer explains how music has changed over the years.

Timbaland isn't very impressed by today's batch of artists. In fact, with the exception of Drake, there are no real standouts among the crowd, Timbo proclaims in New York magazine's "2013 Culture Awards" issue.

The extensive interview features tons of quotables from the brutally honesty Virginia-born producer who said of music's new generation, "They have no stars."

While Drizzy will be featured on his upcoming Textbook Timbo release, the innovative producer, born Timothy Mosley, believes music is too oversaturated these days. "They have these DJ's, techno-whatever, that’s not music. That just goes to show you that drugs is that popular," he said before catching himself. "I don’t want to feel like I'm dissing people. Because guess what, they found a way to make a living for theyself, so who am I to diss the next man who know how to make a living for theyself?”

Later in the interview, Timbaland admitted to being "wrong" for lambasting Drizzy's attempt at a new Aaliyah album, called Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie' a "masterpiece" and talked about the double Grammy nominations he earned this year. "I'm 12 years a slave in the music business," he said of possibly winning Best Rap Song for Jay Z's "Holy Grail" and Best R&B Song for JT's "Pusher Love Girl," which he co-wrote.

"I'm the underdog," he continued. "How many underdogs out there? Fight for what you believe in. S--t will happen. I'm standing up on this podium, as a living witness, to witness that God is always on time. Not on your time. But he knows when you deserve something."

Tim attributes much of that success to having a true love for music. In the face of personal turmoil, alleged financial strife and rumors he tried to drive off a cliff ("Ain't no damn cliffs," he said of the report), music is what keeps him grounded. "Music is my girl," the newly single father shared. "She's not faithful to me, but she's faithful just enough."
