[Tragic] 25-Year-Old Mixed Martial Arts Fighter Suffers Inexplicably Painful Death
The mixed martial arts world is reeling.
ESPN confirmed Bellator MMA fighter Jordan Parsons's death Wednesday, four days after he was struck in a hit-and-run incident, in which he was simply crossing the street. Parsons was 25.
As if the news wasn't tragic enough, the details behind the incident make the story that much more cringeworthy. After Parsons was struck by a silver SUV while crossing a Delray Beach, Florida, intersection late Saturday, he had to undergo an emergency leg amputation. The procedure was supposed to be life saving, but his injuries were too severe to overcome.
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a dear member of the Bellator family, Jordan Parsons," Bellator president Scott Coker said in a press-release statement, as reported by ESPN. "Jordan was an exceptional athlete and a rising star in the sport. But more importantly, he was an exceptional young man. Jordan was hard-working, dedicated, intelligent and a pleasure to be around. He represented all the reasons we love this sport. It's a terribly tragic loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and teammates."
Parsons boasted an 11-2 record since signing with Bellator in 2014 and had been training with the Blackzillians camp in Boca Raton, Florida, for a featherweight bout on May 14 in San Jose, California.
ESPN is additionally reporting that police are still searching for a suspect in the fatal hit-and-run, offering a $1,000 reward for any information that could lead to an arrest.
"He was just crossing the street and someone pegged him, left him for dead, took everything from him and those close to him. It's a complete tragedy. It's a crime," his coach Neil Melanson told ESPN. "He's going to be very much missed. He will always be on my mind and of the teammates and people he touched."
The MMA community continues to offer an outpour of condolences via social media.
