People Are Making a Hilarious Observation About Usher and the Cavs' Win
Musicians joining the professional sports ownership ring isn’t something new. Perhaps one of the most famous examples is Jay Z’s former minority ownership of the New Jersey Nets, but one far less known instance involves Usher.
The Dallas-born singer was seen celebrating with fans and players of the Cleveland Cavaliers last night (June 19) after winning Game 7 of the NBA Finals, with many more wondering why he was so happy — that is, until they remembered he’s part owner of the victorious organization.
Once everyone remembered (or found out), a swarm of folks decided to hit Twitter to crack some jokes at NBA superstars who still haven’t won a championship, putting them behind Mr. Raymond in attaining a ring.
“Usher got a ring before Melo,” numerous Twitter users joked, stating his team’s victory came before New York Knick Carmelo Anthony was able to attain one. People also joked about Jay himself, which is less comparable as he no longer has an official financial stake in any team.
Back in 2005, Usher purchased a 1 percent share of the Cavs, which he paid $9 million for at the time. It became unclear as to whether he continued to own part of the team through the years as it was reported that, after current majority owner Dan Gilbert bought the team at around the same time, he raised the price of ownership. He told Forbes more than a decade ago that he wanted to prove he could be a world class businessman as well as an entertainer.
Looks like Usher is still a part of the winning team and he, like so many Clevelanders, are now incredibly relieved that they now have a championship in basketball. The city of Cleveland hadn’t won a championship in any major sport within the last 52 years prior to Sunday night’s 93-89 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
