2024 Tony Awards: The Black Stars That Won Big
Black people showed out at the 2024 Tony Awards.
The 77th annual event, hosted by Ariana DeBose, took place on Sunday (June 16) at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City. Billy Porter was honored with a special award for his activism in the LGBTQ+ community and Dede Ayite made history as the first Black woman to win an award for Best Costume Design of a Play. Also, JAY-Z and Alicia Keys reunited with a surprise performance of “Empire State of Mind.”

Billy Porter was honored with the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his contributions within the LGBTQ+ community.
Dede Ayite
Dede Ayite just made history as the first Black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play.
Kecia Lewis
Kecia Lewis won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for her role in “Hell's Kitchen.”
Maleah Joi Moon
Maleah Joi Moon took home the award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her role in “Hell’s Kitchen.”
CJay Philip
CJay Phillip was honored with an award for Excellence in Theatre Education.
Kara Young
Kara Young won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for her role in “Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch.”
Nikiya Mathis
Nikiya Mathis was given an award for her hair and wig design and maintenance in “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.”
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins was awarded with Best Revival of a Play.
