Michelle Obama Interrupted by Heckler at Fundraising Event
First Lady Michelle Obama was interrupted mid-speech by a pro-LGBT protester Tuesday evening at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser.
"One of the things I don't do well is this," FLOTUS responded to loud applause, according to the Huffington Post. She reportedly left the lectern and moved over to the protester, saying they could "listen to me or you can take the mic, but I'm leaving. You all decide. You have one choice."
A woman then shouted to the heckler, "You need to go!" The White House left the incident out of the official transcript of the event.
The protester was later identified as Ellen Sturtz, 56, an activist of GetEQUAL, a pro-LGBT rights group. As she was being removed from the event, Sturtz yelled out that she wanted "federal equality before I die."
Sturtz and other activists from her organization were at the fundraiser event demanding an executive order to stop federal contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Sturtz said she donated to the DNC in 2008 because she expected the Obama administration to end workplace discrimination.
