Ohio News Reporter Injured in Shooting; Suspect Dead in Apparent Domestic Incident
A man is dead, and a local news reporter is recovering in the hospital following a shooting that took place in Ohio Monday (Oct. 7), according to police.
WOIO 19 News reporter Winnie Dortch is currently recovering after undergoing surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center after being injured in the early morning incident in Lakewood, a Cleveland suburb.
According to the outlet, the cops received a call around 8 a.m. reporting an argument between two people. As officers were en route, 911 callers informed dispatchers that gunshots had been fired. Dortch was found suffering from a serious gunshot wound. Nearby on the scene, 34-year-old Bryant Carter was discovered dead.
Lakewood Police Captain Gary Stone told reporters that investigators believe Carter shot Dortch before taking his own life. Law enforcement added that Dortch and Carter knew each other. According to WKYC, a priest from nearby St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church confirmed they were both members of the Clifton Early Learning Center community.
During a broadcast that afternoon, WOIO 19 News confirmed that Dortch's surgery went well. "This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack, She was immediately rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries," the outlet’s director, Brian Sinclair, said. "Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community."
