In 2017, Little Richard Has Some Interesting Thoughts On Homosexuality
Genre-transcending music legend Little Richard broke through many barriers and paved the way for Black rock and roll, blues and soul artists of generations to come.
It can be said, then, that his rise to fame in the late ‘40s was a direct result of breaking the pre-established rules that might have kept his revolutionary sound boxed in. When it comes to sexuality, however, the 84-year-old has shifted his thoughts to a position that some may consider overwhelmingly dated.
In an interview with the Christian-based Three Angels Broadcasting Network, Richard deemed homosexuality as “unnatural affections,” explaining that men and women are meant to live heterosexual lifestyles by way of religious standards.
“You know, it’s just like everybody’s turning one way or the other,” he began. “When I first came in show business, they wanted you to look like anybody but yourself. And anybody come in show business, they’re going to say you’re gay. Are you straight? Are you a homosexual, something? They’re going to say it. But God, Jesus made men, men. He made women, women. And you’ve got to live the way God wants you to live.”
These sentiments come as a turnaround of sorts for the “Good Golly Miss Molly” artist. As pointed out in a GQ article from 2012, Richard revealed that he was gay and was even kicked out of his home by his father as a youth because of his sexuality.
"I've been gay all my life and I know God is a God of love, not of hate," GQ reported of his statement in a 1995 Penthouse interview. "How can I [put] down the fisherman when I've been fishing all my life?"
At 84 years old, it now seems that a lot has changed since then.
