The OG!: Queen Latifah Opened The Door For The New Black CoverGirls
When CoverGirl announced that Issa Rae and Ayesha Curry were joining the roster, we wondered what Queen Latifah thought about it? We didn't have to wonder for long because she spoke to the team at ESSENCE about it candidly.
"I think that was great because I was opening the door of what a CoverGirl could — and should — look like," Queen Latifah shared during her interview.
Being the queen of foundations for women of color all began in 2006 with demand — lots of it — according to the 47 year-old beauty.
"I was able to create the Queen Collection with CoverGirl, which was their entry into a line for women of color. I knew that we needed more tones than were offered. For me, it's what it should have always been, and creating this different identity for women," she shares.
She even lightly touched on the recent growth of beauty brands catering to women of color, including the successful launch of Fenty Beauty.
"The whole landscape has changed, and after the Queen Collection, everybody, including CoverGirl, expanded their lines for women of color. We were very successful! And people needed this."
Speak that truth! It is refreshing to see the unity of #blackgirlmagic! It is so needed as we break the ugly barriers of beauty — and for those who don't know, we are beauty!
