Drakeo the Ruler’s Mother Plans to Sue Following Rapper’s Fatal Stabbing

The Los Angeles native was fatally stabbed during an altercation backstage at a festival.

Drakeo the Ruler’s mother is seeking justice following her son’s killing last Saturday (Dec. 18). The Los Angeles rapper, born Darrell Wayne Caldwell, was fatally stabbed during an altercation backstage at the Snoop Dogg-headlined Once Upon a Time in L.A. festival. He was 28-years-old.

Not much is known about what led to the altercation and subsequent stabbing of the “Talk to Me” rapper, but his mother, Darrylene Corniel, recently told Rolling Stone that there was insufficient security at the musical event organized by Live Nation — the same organization behind Travis Scott’s tragic Astroworld festival.

Corniel told the outlet that her son’s death is being considered a homicide as of now. “He was hit in his neck,” the mother told reporters as she reportedly ran two fingers up from her collarbone to show where an individual had logged a blade into her son’s neck. “I saw him when I went to the hospital. They said it’s a homicide, so I wasn’t able to hug him or kiss him or anything like that. I had to look at him through a window.”

Investigators said the incident involved “a suspect wielding an edged weapon.” However, it’s unclear if this was a weapon snuck backstage or an object that was found and later used to cause harm. According to an unidentified source who spoke with the outlet, people entering the backstage area were supposed to pass through a metal detector and a screening area patrolled by K9s trained to detect gunpowder and other explosives.

Now the grieving mother wants those responsible for her son’s death to be brought to justice, telling the outlet she is looking to take legal action. “I need this to be out there. I need people to know. And I do want justice for my son. And I do believe that justice will be served,” she said. “I will not rest until justice is served.”

Elsewhere, Corniel added, “We plan to sue,” citing that the venue failed to do its job and provide protection. “This happened backstage at an event. Someone has to be held accountable.”

“They let all these people in, and you’re not supposed to have all these people backstage. And your security is supposed to be in place,” the mother explained. “The whole program should have been orchestrated a lot better than what it was. And there should have been more protection. Even if you have metal detectors, even if you pat them down, you let those people come in there. You had more people come in than you were supposed to. And you allowed them to jump on my son. You didn’t protect my son.”

In a statement to the publication on Monday (Dec. 20), a spokesperson for Live Nation stated that they were “extremely saddened by the passing of Drakeo The Ruler. Our thoughts go out to his loved ones and fans, and we’re doing everything we can to assist authorities in their investigation.”

This is a still-developing story.
