New ‘Black-Ish’ Spin-off Sparks Twitter Backlash Over Title

The upcoming series focuses on character Rainbow Johnson's childhood.

A new spin-off is officially being adding to the Black-ish franchise and will focus on the childhood of Tracee Ellis Ross' character, Rainbow Johnson.

As previously reported, early stages of the spin-off's production were revealed back in February 2019, with Deadline now confirming that ABC has officially given an early season order to the new show, controversially titled Mixed-ish.

The comedy, which follows Rainbow's childhood growing up in a mixed-race family in the 1980s, stars Arica Himmel as young Rainbow and Tika Sumpter as her mother, Alicia Johnson. Entertainment Weekly further reports that Anders Holm will play young Rainbow's father in an already-filmed episode of Black-ish, titled "Becoming Bow," but the role will be recast for the spin-off.

  • Mixed-ish is both written and executive produced by Kenya Barris and Peter Saji. Ross is also noted as an executive producer, along with Randall Winston, Arists First, Cinema Gypsy and Anthony Anderson.

In addition to this news, the Black-ish cast also learned that the hit series has been renewed for a sixth season.

Ross recently took to Twitter to share her excitement about the new project:

  • While Black-ish fans are excited for the forthcoming series, many seem to take issue with its title, Mixed-ish, with several explaining specifically what's hardest to swallow about the interesting name.

  • Early Black-ish supporters would know that, prior to its series premiere, that title caused a stir online, as well, with even Donald Trump ignorantly chiming in, calling it "racist."

While it appears as the show is off to a questionable start to some, one thing's for certain: it has started a conversation.
