Yung Miami Denies Hazel E's Claim That City Girls Stole 'Act Up'

"She didn't take kindly to Hazel's Instagram Live move..."

Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood's Hazel-E is racking up another beef off the small screen, and this time, it's with Miami femcee rap duo City Girls. Hopping on Instagram Live on Tuesday (April 30), Hazel claims that the "Twerk" femcess ripped off the beat of a single she dropped in 2017 for one of their biggest smash hits to date: "Act Up."

  • In a short video posted on The Shade Room (@theshaderoom), Hazel-E and another person play a few verses of JT and Yung Miami's 2018 breakout, "Act Up," which spent five weeks in the top spot on Billboard's Emerging Artists chart, before switching over to play a few notes of her song, which was originally titled "Girl Code," on piano.

  • While there are some similarities between the record's instrumentals, it's hard to pass judgment on a seconds-long snippet of music. Miami, who has been repping City Girls as a solo unit until her rap-mate, Jatavia “J.T.” Johnson, is released from prison, reportedly in 2020, wasn't here for Hazel-E's shade-throwing, either.
The Miami-based rapper hit back in The Shade Room's comments, stating that the City Girls didn't steal anything from anybody. Periodt.

  • Many rushed to call foul on Hazel-E's claim as well and questioned why she's bringing this up a year later. Lil Yatchy — who claims he "wrote the whole song" except for JT's last verse —  has also went on record talking about how the smash hit came to be.

  • "One day I was in the studio with my best friend, Earl, and he played the beat and said, 'Write something for City Girls,' and I was like, 'OK.' And I just did it," the rapper told FADER in April. Yachty is credited as a writer on the track alongside J.T. and producer EarlThePearll, who presumably came up with the beat in question.

  • Hazel-E is not letting the matter go, however. First, she uploaded a screenshot of her albums and songs on her Instagram page, captioning the photo: "People be mad asf at the truth 🤷🏽‍♀️ @girlcodeinc it’s been my lifestyle. Periodt in my @citygirls voice."

  • Then, she hit back one final time, holding that she will fight for what's hers legally if need be.
