White Woman Who Kept Black Man From Entering Complex Says She Isn’t Racist And Was Following Rules

Hilary Thornton also said she would not have changed anything about how she reacted.

The white woman who was seen on video trying to stop a Black man from entering the apartment complex where he lives is claiming she isn’t a racist.

Last week, Hilary Thornton was seen trying to stop D'Arreion Toles from entering the Elder Shirt Lofts in St. Louis. In a conversation with Fox 2, Thornton said she left the door cracked when she was walking her dog. She then noticed Toles entering the building.

“When I noticed an individual that I did not know here, my only thought was to follow directions I had been given by condo association board members repeatedly; and that’s to never allow access to anyone that you don’t know,” she said.

Thornton had several emails from the condo association telling residents what to do if they were faced with a situation like this.

“I simply asked if he lived there because the direction from the association is … that if you don’t know the person, you don’t let them in,” she said.

Thornton said she told him she couldn’t let him in and asked if he had a key fob.

“It’s the only indicator any resident has that they live in the building and he wouldn’t answer me,” she said. “He would not show me one."

In the video, Thornton was seen standing in Toles’ way and demanding her tell her which apartment he lives in. He then made his way past Thornton, who continued to follow him.

“…Because the camera was pointed at the ground and that’s when you hear me say, ‘Oh my God, are you serious?’ and that’s when he says, ‘Go ahead, call police,’” she said.

Thornton then followed Toles to his loft, where he used his key to open the door. After the video went viral, Thornton’s employer, Tribeca STL, fired her for racial profiling.

Thornton said she has received death threats and detests being called a racist.

“That’s false and heartbreaking,” she said. “Those are words that cut deep.”

Thornton also said she would not change one thing about her actions Friday evening.
