Watch Nate Parker's Short Film #AmeriCAN
Nate Parker is making a splash as Gugu Mbatha-Raw's love interest in Beyond the Lights, but the actor proves he's more than just a pretty face (and chiseled body) with his short film #AmeriCAN. Parker directed the 14-minute film, which stars LaLa Anthony, Affion Crockett and others, as a response to the systemic prejudice of Black youth around the country.
"#AmeriCAN is a short film and public service announcement that comes in response to recent events that have divided the country over racial lines," reads the synopsis. "With the influx of violence against Black males in America over the past few years, the piece strives to offer a unique perspective in examining the value of lives of the country’s citizens...The goal is to bring all people together, without exception to race, religion, gender or age, and send the message that all blood flows red."
Says Parker about his film, "The only thing worse than the ever-growing epidemic of murdered Black youth in America, is the lack of empathy expressed by many of our country's citizens. In developing this project, our goal was to create a piece of media that would offer a relatable perspective to all who watched it. It is my hope this film promotes sustainable discourse and serves as a conduit for empathy, healing and change."
