Denzel Washington Headed to Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun
After steamrolling over the box office with his new summer action comedy hit 2 Guns, Denzel Washington will soon be headed back to the Great White Way next Spring.
The Tony winner is set to star in a revival of A Raisin in the Sun on Broadway. Washington will star as Walter Lee Younger in the Lorraine Hansberry drama, which was first produced in 1959. Diahann Carroll will star as the play’s matriarch, Lena, in a role that marks her first appearance on Broadway in over 30 years. Rounding out the cast is Sophie Okonedo, who will portray Ruth Younger, and Noni Rose Anika, who is set to play Beneatha Younger. Others starring in the production include Stephen Tyrone Williams, Jason Dirden and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
The revival will be directed by Kenny Leon, who also helmed Washingtons’s Tony-award winning Broadway revival of Fences in 2010. Previews of A Raisin in the Sun will begin March 8 and opening night is set for April at the Barrymore Theater.
A Raisin in the Sun last appeared on Broadway nearly a decade ago in 2004, with Sean Combs starring as Walter Lee Younger and Phylicia Rashad as Lena. The legendary Sidney Poitier starred in the original production as Walter along with Claudia McNeil as Lena and Ruby Dee as Ruth Younger.
