The Black musical Dream Girls opens on Broadway on this day in 1981. Centering on the story behind a Chicago girl group’s rise to fame — and difficulties once they reached the top — the musical would enjoy a run of 1521 shows on the Great White Way. In 2006, it would be turned into a feature film starring Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson.
