Young M.A Confirms She Want To Be Cast As Cleo For A ‘Set It Off’ Remake

Keyshia Cole also weighed in on the casting.

We’re still trying to wrap our heads around the fact that Solange could’ve been a Cheetah Girl and now Young M.A has fans tripping out over another cinematic classic.

On Wednesday (June 5), The Shade Room shared a screenshot from the rapper’s Instagram of a recent Set It Off fancast she had shared with her 4 million followers.

  • The fictional lineup casted Kat Graham as Lida "Stony" Newsom, Young M.A as Cleopatra “Cleo” Sims,  Keke Palmer as Tisean "T.T." Williams, and Teyana Taylor as Francesca "Frankie" Sutton. The “Sleep Walkin” rapper seemed to co-sign that she was down with the fancasting to play Cleo if a remake were to happen.

  • In the original 1996 film, Queen Latifah (Cleo), Jada Pinkett Smith (Stony), Vivica A. Fox (Frankie) and Kimberly Elise (T.T.) played the four friends who begin robbing banks to turn their lives around.

Pretty tall shoes for anyone to fill. As one of the few films that centered around Black sisterhood amidst a life of crime, the film is like a cinematic relic.

  • Which is why the news struck a few nerves. Many fans were completely against the idea of a remake, calling it “unnecessary.”

“Some classics you leave just as that .. a classic. Meaning its untouchable,” one person wrote in the comment section.

“Don’t y’all mess around and jack up a classic with a remake. Make a part two or something but not a damn remake!” another person wrote.

  • Other fans brought up that while they were against a remake, a sequel or spin-off was fair game. They pointed out that a possible film could pick up with Stony, who was the sole survivor, after she escaped to Mexico on a bus.

“How about a new story line and we call it set it up , also we need a different jada,” one commenter wrote.

  • Keyshia Cole chimed in that she’d happily play Stony.

  • The general consensus seemed to be to leave the original alone or pick a new storyline that didn't re-write the original character arcs.

  • Well, what do you say, folks? Young M.A. as a young Cleo, or throw the whole idea away?
