Oscars: Don't Blame Us for Dissing Straight Outta Compton Again
The Motion Picture Academy has taken a lot of heat lately for #OscarsSoWhite, and has been in overdrive trying to keep people from boycotting the upcoming Oscars for its lack of inclusiveness. The Academy caught a fresh round of heat this week when it was leaked that the cast and crew of Straight Outta Compton — save for the two screenwriters who are nominated — have not been invited to the awards show.
But this is one faux pas the Academy isn't willing to take responsibility for. According to TMZ, a source from the Academy says that only nominees and presenters are officially "invited" to the Oscars, and all other tickets are divided up between the various film studios. If you're not nominated, it's up to the studios to decide whom they want to invite.
So, Straight Outta Compton wasn't invited because Universal, the studio that distributed the blockbuster hit, didn't extend an invitation. Why they didn't think to do so despite the film being one of their biggest non-franchise hits of the year is a whole 'nother question.
Of course, we now know that at least Ice Cube wouldn't have accepted the invitation anyway. See what some other big names who plan to boycot #OscarsSoWhite have to say, below:
