A Look Back At 8 Iconic Brandy Roles
On Tuesday, February 11, Brandy celebrates her 46th birthday, but for over three decades, she’s given us the gift of unforgettable performances. Whether captivating audiences on sitcoms like Moesha or keeping us on the edge of our seats in “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” the artist affectionately known as ‘The Vocal Bible’ always commands our screens.
Below, we look back at eight of Brandy’s most iconic roles.
“Thea”
One year before Brandy released her classic self-titled 1994 debut album, the California native launched her acting career on the Thea Vidale-led early-90s sitcom “Thea” as her saucy daughter, Danesha Turrell. While the show would only last for one season, it was the jumpstart that Brandy needed to helm her own show three years later.
“Moesha”
“Thea” might’ve been Brandy’s start in television, but former teen sitcom “Moesha” solidified her as Hollywood gold. On the show, which ran for six seasons, Moesha Mitchell dealt with growing pains, ever-changing friendships with her tight clique, dating woes, and frequently butted heads with her father, Frank Mitchell (William Allen Young).
“Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella”
Brandy made history as the first Black Cinderella in the 1997 televised musical film version of the Disney classic, with updated music and a diverse cast–including the legendary Whitney Houston–that appealed to the times. The singer-actress would revisit the character in the 2024 movie “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” reuniting with her King Charming (Paolo Montalban).
“I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”
Brandy was among the few prominent Black women in horror films when she was cast as Karla Wilson in the 1998 slasher “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” Spoiler alert: she thankfully survives by the end.
“The Game”
Chardonnay called the shots upon her season five debut on former sports sitcom-drama “The Game.” She quickly married and divorced Jason Pitts (Coby Bell). Because of her energetic but oft-chaotic personality, the character of Chardonnay earned Brandy an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014.
“Queens”
As part of an ensemble cast including Eve and Naturi Naughton, Brandy rocked the mic as Naomi on the short-lived musical drama series “Queens,” where she and her fellow femmes planned to reunite.
“The Front Room”
In the A24 horror movie “The Front Room,” Brandy plays Belinda, a pregnant supportive wife to her husband, Norman (Andrew Burnap), but has to set strong boundaries when his menacing stepmother, Kathryn Hunter, moves in with them.
